5 Android Settings That Are Killing Your Battery Right Now
Your phone is losing battery faster than it should — and most people have no idea it's their own settings doing it. In the next few minutes, I'm going to show you exactly which 5 Android settings are draining your battery right now, and how to fix each one.
I'm demonstrating on a Google Pixel 7, but these steps work on any Android phone. Samsung and other brands may look slightly different, but the settings are the same.
Setting 1 — Location Always On
The first battery killer is your Location settings — specifically, apps that are set to access your location all the time, even when you're not using them.
Go to Settings > Location > App permissions. Change almost everything from "Allow all the time" to "Allow only while using the app" or "Ask every time." Only navigation apps like Google Maps truly need constant access.
Apps like Facebook, Instagram, and weather apps are pinging your GPS constantly in the background. This one change alone can add 1 to 2 hours back to your battery life.
Setting 2 — Background App Activity
This one shocks people. Apps set to Unrestricted background activity can run freely, sync, and even wake your phone up with no limits — all while draining your battery.
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Usage. Tap any app with a long background time. Tap "Allow background usage" and switch it from Unrestricted to Optimized. Do this for social media, news, and shopping apps — the worst offenders.
Optimized mode still lets the app do what it needs — Android just gets smarter about when and how, saving your battery in the process.
Setting 3 — Always-On Display
Always-On Display keeps a clock or notifications visible on your screen even when your phone is locked. It looks great — but it is constantly using your screen's power, even when you're not looking at it.
Go to Settings, type "Always-On Display" in the search bar, tap it, and turn the toggle OFF.
This single setting can drain 5 to 15 percent of your battery every day — just from your screen showing a clock you're not even looking at.
Setting 4 — Account Sync
Every account on your phone — Google, email, social — is quietly syncing in the background. Most people are syncing way more than they actually need.
Go to Settings > Passwords, Passkeys and Accounts. Tap any account, then tap "Account sync." Turn off sync for anything you don't actually need updating automatically — like Google TV, Google News, or unused services. Repeat for every account on your phone.
Every item you disable is one less thing waking your phone up in the background.
Setting 5 — Hotspot Left On
This is one of the most overlooked battery drains. Even if no device is connected, leaving your Mobile Hotspot on means your phone is actively broadcasting a Wi-Fi signal — constantly using energy.
Go to Settings > Network and Internet. Check the status under Hotspot and Tethering. If it says anything other than "Off" — tap in and switch it off immediately.
Most people turn the hotspot on for a few minutes, then forget about it. Check it right now — you might be surprised.
Quick Recap
The 5 Android settings draining your battery right now:
- Location always on — for apps that don't need it
- Unrestricted background activity — switch to Optimized
- Always-On Display — turn it off completely
- Account sync — disable what you don't need
- Mobile Hotspot left on — check and switch it off
You don't have to fix them all at once — even changing two or three tonight will make a noticeable difference by tomorrow morning.
